Perennial evergreen bulbiferous scapose herbs; bulbs tunicate globose, 2-3 cm in diameter. Leaves many, fascicled, linear, flattened, 15-50 cm x 6-10 mm, green, reddish at base. Flowers solitary on top of scape; scape up to 36 cm long, hollow; spathe up to 4.3 cm long, basally tubular (tube 2-2.5 cm), apex 2-3 notched, membranous, purplish; pedicel 3.3-5 cm long. Flowers large, 8-11 cm long and 8-9 cm across, bisexual, actinomorphic, epigynous, trimerous, rose red to pink. Perianth rose red to pink, funnelform; tepals 6, in two whorls of 3 each; connate at base; tube 2-2.5 cm long; lobes obovate, subacute, recurved, 8.5-10.5 cm x 1.7-2.5 cm, lobes of outer whorl broader than of inner whorl. Stamens 6, inserted in upper region of perianth tube; filaments 2.5-3 cm long; anthers 1.3-1.5 cm long, linear, curved, versatile. Ovary inferior, 6-7 mm x 5- 5.5 mm, mostly lobed and 3-locular, many ovules per loculus, axile placentation; style slender, 5.5-7.5 cm long; stigma strongly 3-lobed, occasionally lobes further forked. Capsule subglobose.
In this species perianth, stamens, stigma and ovary show many variations: Perianth with 7-9 tepals, 7-9 stamens, 4-5-fid stigma and 4-5-locular ovary frequently observed.
